Crypto lobbyists are making a big push in Ohio. They’re pouring money into the state as they prepare for the upcoming election. Reports say that a group of crypto-focused super PACs has spent a whopping $38 million to support Republican candidate Bernie Moren in his race for a U.S. Senate seat.

Moren is up against Sherrod Brown, who has been labeled as “strongly anti-crypto” by the advocacy group Stand With Crypto, which is backed by Coinbase. Brown has voted against reversing SAB 121 and has even claimed that cryptocurrency is funding Hamas.

While speaking to crypto supporters in Austin, Moren expressed his concerns. He said, “Today, in the United States Senate, you don’t have people who know how to use email, and we’re asking them to regulate digital currencies. You need to have people who have a basic understanding, otherwise they’re driven by special interest groups.”

A spokesperson for Moren highlighted his deep understanding of crypto technology. They contrasted this with Brown, claiming he “doesn’t know the difference between blockchain and a chainsaw.”

According to a report from Rolling Stone, crypto political groups are set to spend $32 million between August 22 and the end of September to help boost Moren’s campaign. A group called Defend American Jobs is funneling money into the race. Rolling Stone describes them as “effectively a subsidiary” of Fairshake, a PAC focused on crypto that is funded by Coinbase, Ripple, and Andreessen Horowitz.

Brown has been vocal about his criticism of the digital asset sector. Back in late 2022, he referred to the crypto market as a “complicated, unregulated pot of money.”

He stated, “I’ve spent much of the last eight years as chair of the Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, educating my colleagues and the public about crypto and the dangers it presents to our security and consumers who get hoodwinked.”
