The Nigerian government has dropped the money laundering charges against Tigran Gambaryan, a Binance executive. Local news outlet Punch first reported this news. The decision came just days after Gambaryan was denied bail.
According to Reuters, the government made this move to allow Gambaryan to seek medical treatment abroad. A government lawyer stated that Nigeria will continue its money laundering case against Binance without him.
Gambaryan, who is the head of financial crime compliance at Binance, has been detained in Nigeria since February. He came to the country at the government's invitation to discuss company-related issues.
During his time in detention, Gambaryan has faced serious health challenges. He developed malaria, pneumonia, and tonsillitis. He also suffers from complications due to a herniated disc, which has required him to use a wheelchair. However, in a recent court appearance, he managed without a wheelchair and used a single crutch instead.
Requests for comments from Gambaryan's family, Binance, and Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have not been answered yet.
